Angels come in all shapes and sizes...

We believe in angels. Lost, at the pound, in the cell next to the room marked "Euthanasia," she was a sad sight. Though broken and battered, her face lit up when she saw us. My heart broke when I saw her pained body, but her sad eyes were filled with joy and hope. She looked at me as if she were seeing an angel. I knew it was a miracle I found her. I've been broken and battered like that poor dog myself, a victim (I mean survivor) of domestic violence. Somehow I made it through. Like many survivors, it made me stronger and more compassionate for others suffering in the world, and I became determined to try to alleviate the suffering somehow. I knew there were many animals suffering broken and damaged, but utterly alone and abandoned. People sometimes say, "So, they're only animals..." When you've had a dog or cat become part of your family, you know that they have emotions, feel pain and joy, just as we do. I have often felt animals, wild and domestic, pull on my soul and heart strings. That fueled my passion for this site and the hope that I could influence people to rescue and love one animal and live compassionately. At the passing of our old family dog, Toska, a once bouncy Springer Spaniel, I felt something strangely warm and wonderful -- a peaceful, glowing light that lifted the grief from my heart. It was as if it were some amazing last gift from her. "Angels," the embodiment of the spirit of beauty, love and hope do seem to be all around us if we choose to see them. And, that spirit can be found in the people and animals blessing our lives.
