Celtic inspired jewelry and tapestries feature an ancient art style that was
developed in Southern Germany and Eastern France several millennia ago. The art
form spread throughout Europe, Ireland, the British Isles and the Nordic Viking
lands and can be found on many artifacts including weapons and shields, jewelry, horse
bridle, picture stones, rune stones,
and grave stones such as in Sutton Hoo, Gotland
and other prehistoric sites. The most famous early medieval examples can be
found in the Book
of Kells illuminated manuscript made by monks in the early period of
Christianity. Celtic art is known for its elaborate knot work designs, often
representing forces of nature, mysticism and spirituality. Often ships, lions, dragons,
horses, and sea creatures are depicted in the ancient designs as well as scenes from
pagan mythology, sagas and legends. The picture stone above shows Odin astride
his eight-legged horse Sleipnir approaching Valhalla.
